Vegetarian with leather shoes?

My friend just became a veg and she has thses really cute high heal boots... but they're leather. She got them a long time ago, before she whent veg. She asked me if she should through them away and I didn't know what to say. She also has a down coat.

Vegetarian with leather shoes?
anything she has before being veg she shouldnt throw away. that is just wasting. just make sure she doesnt buy any more.
Reply:Just because she doesn't eat meat doesn't mean she can't wear leather, its not as though shes going to eat them.
Reply:I still own and use two leather saddles, leather riding boots, and leather belts that I wear when I show horses; I've been a vegetarian for several years. My everyday shoes are synthetic, and my jackets are made of synthetic materials as well. It kind of seems wasteful to throw out perfectly good leather shoes et cetera when you can just use them until they wear out. Afterwards, your friend can vow not to buy more leather.
Reply:well, vegans are the ones who don't have anything to do with animal products. i'm a vegetarian and i still wear leather shoes (ballet slippers), but it just depends on what she feels is right. i wouldn't waste them by throwing them away, i would donate them to a local goodwill or other donation place.
Reply:No. She should certainly avoid buying new leather or down products, but throwing away those that she already have would not bring the animals back (and might even be considered disrespectful, as she would be throwing away products that cost them their lives).
Reply:I believe that it is mostly vegans that do not wear leather, and down objects. It doesn't make too much sense for her to not wear them. It is up to her personal feelings and morals on the shoes and coat.
Reply:If she's vegetarian for political reasons, then one way to think of it is that she would be needlessly wasting an animals life that has already died. If she likes the shoes - then it is better to wear the shoes and enjoy them, choosing to buy vegetarian products from the present forward.
Reply:Keep the shoes. Cows ect are not killed for their skin but for their meat shoes and coats are just a byproduct of someones dinner.
Reply:I don't know but that sounds like the name of a new rock band "Vegetarian with leather shoes"
Reply:Down is not necessarily bad. Feathers can be plucked just before the birds are going to lose them anyway, and also they can be collected from nests after the babies grow up and leave, because the nests are lined in down. Chances are the feathers in the coat come from a duck that was killed for food though. Wool is a good alternative because it does not harm a sheep when it is sheared. Some animal products are ok, it just depends on how they are manufactured. You just have to know the source to decide.

There is simply no reason to throw away good products. She should at least use the things she already has. Waste is much worse than eating meat in my opinion.
Reply:There's no sense in wasting usable items. If she still likes those things, she should wear them. If she's not comfortable wearing them anymore, she should donate them to charity, NOT throw them away.
Reply:If she has guilt about owning and using these items then she should donate them to charity - if she has no guilt then she should keep them. People choose the veg lifestyle for many reasons ranging from dietary concerns, religion and animal protection, it is up to her to decide how far she wishes to take it. Good Luck!
Reply:I still don't understand the problem with using animal skins. If the meat is feeding people, and meat-eaters are most certainly going to continue eating meat, why NOT use the leather for coats or shoes?

I buy leather products almost exclusive, because a PETA member once thought it was funny to paint my leather jacket. Jackets, belt, wallet, shoes, you name it. There's not going to be a significant percentage of the population boycotting leather. The consumer value is just too high.

Relax, enjoy your warm jacket and your boots.

Who CARES what other people say? If they don't like it, fine. No need to pass judgement, or allow people to pass judgement on you for your style choices.

If what she wears is a dealbreaker for acceptance or a friendship, then I wouldn't say the friendship is worth it, and go find new friends to hang out with instead of the friends with sticks up their butts about your purchases. Your friend should go with her convictions, not what a bunch of overpaid zealots from PETA think.
Reply:If she bought them before going veg, throwing them is a waste. It adds insult to injury to the dead animal. Think about it. Just tell her not to buy any more. Perhaps she can even donate the stuff to someone who needs it.
Reply:humm ...... what now shes gonna buy,, bannana leaves shoes or shoes made up of grass or cocunut shell..... or rubber gum boots ????

is she serious ???? tommorow if i buy an bycycle ,, that dosn't mean i wont take a taxii ????

just tell her that,, she has done great job by becoming a veggie,,it but that's it, no need to get paranoid...... its just fine,,, its all in the head,,,
Reply:If she went veg because she has an animal rights belief, then she's a hypocrite for keeping those items, cute though they may be. She should donate them and get some cotton tennies and a flannel jacket.
