How do I get the smoke smell out of nubuck boots?

I just won a pair of boots on ebay--but when they arrived they totally stank! They smell like cigarette smoke--and they smell up my house, too. I don't want to wear them because I am afraid they will stink up me and my clothes.

Is there any product or method for removing--not covering up--this kind of smell from leather? I need something that isn't perfumey or anything.

Sprinkle baking soda all over them and set outside for a day.
Reply:What I don't like about this anwer is that there is no way to get the baking soda off the boots after wards. Nubuck is halfway between suede and and leather--so it is soft and textured, and you can't get it wet. So covering them with baking soda just replaces one problem with another. Report It

Reply:You DO NOT use saddle soap on Nubuck! You'll ruin the boots. You buy suede or nubuck cleaner and use that. If the odor still doesn't go away take them to a shoe maker and have them re-dyed!
Reply:orange and cedar oils remove the smell nicely. In the mean time keep them on the porch.
Reply:Is it too late to return the boots for your money back?
Reply:Yes, go back online and choose a suitable product at:

You'll find exactly what you are looking for there.
Reply:baking soda
Reply:First I'd clean them with saddle soap to remove residue. Then if the smell still won't go away I would try febreeze lightly sprayed on boots. But the saddle soap should straiten out the problem.
