Cobblers! What are those tabs at the back of boots for?

You know the ones I mean, they are like leather loops located right at the top of the heels. You dont see them as often as you used to do, but Ive got a pair of secondhand high-backed shoes/boots with 'em on. Is it so you can string them up onto something; or are they to help you pull the boots onto your feet (instead of using a shoe horn); or is there some other devious reason (like the straps you used to get high up in the back of some cars)? Oo-err, Im scared!

Cobblers! What are those tabs at the back of boots for?
Use them to pull a tight fitting boot on or if you wish you can hang them on hangers at night when you go to bed. Or tie them together so they don't get separated when you take them off.
Reply:To pull your boots on
Reply:i once new a skin head who used to clip his bracers to them

why i don't know
Reply:They are there so that it will be easier when you try to put them on.
Reply:they're so you can pull those suckers on

but you can hang them on to something too
Reply:so you can pull them on.
Reply:Mostly because they're unattractive, and great fairly soon if you use them for their designated purpose.
Reply:As it so happens I was reading about DMs t'other day. They were safety boots introduced in the 1940s. The tab at the back meant that it was easy for the boss to check that his staff were wearing safety boots and avoid the 15 shilling fine.
Reply:I always thought they were there to help you pull the boot on, however, they're not very helpful.
Reply:Pull on them to help pull shoe over heal.
Reply:I'm sure they served a double purpose - to help pull them on, and so you could take them off and string them around your neck if necessary. I'm sure I've seen Charlie Chaplin do that.
Reply:so you can pull them on easter they used to have them on the legs of knickers so you could pull them off easyer
Reply:back in the day, you would get strung up by your bootstraps.
Reply:Pull them on
Reply:In the days, when boots were the normal working wear, they used a special hook to pull the boots on. The hook was also used to lace the boot.

In those days boots usually came up above the ankle and the laces were laced around stand-up cleats. This meant that the boots were reasonably water and mud proof.
Reply:Those are there so you can 'pull yourself up by your bootstraps.'
Reply:They help you to pull them on .
Reply:To pull em on
Reply:They are so you can pull them on.
Reply:The tabs on the back of boots is to help to put your shoe on. All the other reasons you listed just sound stupid.
